Injury to Eddie Alvarez Postpones Bellator Title Fight With Michael Chandler

Eddie Alvarez

By FCF Staff

A scheduled October 15th bout between Bellator Lightweight Champion Eddie Alvarez and Season 4 tournament winner Michael Chandler has been cancelled due an undisclosed injury Alvarez has incurred. According to a news release from the promotion, although the bout has no new date scheduled, it could possibly take place during the current Bellator season.

“Eddie suffered an injury that will keep him out of our October 15th show at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City,” said Bellator Chairman & CEO Bjorn Rebney. “Eddie Alvarez has a huge heart and if there was any way for him to fight on the 15th, I know he would.  Ed’s in spectacular condition, so both of us are hopeful that this fight can potentially still occur later this fall.”

The Alvarez, Chandler fight was set to headline Bellator 54, which will be hosted by the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J. The card will feature the semifinals of Bellator’s middleweight tournament, as well as Bellator Bantamweight Champion Zack Makovsky versus UFC vet Ryan Roberts in a non-title bout.

Alvarez (22-2) hasn’t competed since April when he worked his way to a unanimous decision win over Pat Curran at Bellator 39. The Philadelphia fighter has won seven straight fights.

Chandler (8-0) worked his way to a UD win over Patricky Freire in the finals of Bellator’s Season 4 lightweight tournament this past May, to earn a title fight with Alvarez.
