The narrative heading into UFC 284 is that Islam Makhachev’s path to victory is via his wrestling and submission game. But, according to the lightweight champ, his “goal” is to knock Alexander Volkanovski out.

Although Makhachev has showcased improving striking skills in his recent years, the consensus is that the renowned grappler will be outmatched by Volkanovski on the feet. But, while talking to the media this week ahead of their fight on Saturday, Makhachev claimed he intends to KO the featherweight champ (quotes via MMA Junkie).

“We’re working on that a lot because look at my fist,” Makhachev laughed while pointing at his scabbed hand. “My goal, I want to knock him out because I have everything for that. Last fight I said before the fight, ‘I want to choke (Charles) Oliveira because he has the most finishes in the UFC’ and what I did? The same goes here. I want to knock him out.”

Makhachev (23-1) secured the lightweight title in October, by submitting Oliveira in round two.

Volkanovski (25-1), meanwhile, recorded his third, decision win over Max Holloway in his last outing. That bout took place in July. Volkanovski is moving up to 155 pounds to challenge Makhachev for the lightweight title.

In the card’s co-main event, Yair Rodriguez will battle Josh Emmett for the interim featherweight title.

UFC 284 will take place in Perth, Australia.
