Jake Ellenberger Calls New 6 Fight UFC Deal “Great”, Discusses Possible Return Date

By FCF Staff

It may have taken Jake Ellenberger over 20 pro bouts to earn an invitation to the Ultimate Fighting Championship, but after going 5-1 in the Octagon since his 2009 arrival, the 26 year has been rewarded with a new, six fight contract.

“Yes, I did sign 6 fights,” Ellenberger told FCF recently, when asked to confirm reports that he has re-upped with the promotion. “It’s great; the UFC takes great care of me. It’s an honor to be competing with the best fighters in the world.”

Since losing by split decision to Carlos Condit at Fight Night 19 in September, 2009, Ellenberger has gone on to score wins over Mike Pyle, John Howard, Carlos Eduardo Rocha, Sean Pierson and most recently Jake Shields.

Ellenberger’s latest victory, a 53 second stoppage of the former Strikeforce champion Shields on September 17th, has left the experienced wrestler within striking distance of a title shot. Despite having signed a new agreement with the UFC, however, it remains to be seen when Ellenberger will fight next.

“I don’t have an opponent confirmed, but I’ve heard a few names thrown around,” said Ellenberger (26-5). “I don’t believe I will fight again until January of 2012”.

Last month, news surfaced stating that the UFC might be negotiating a bout between Ellenberger and Diego Sanchez, however, the Nebraska native informed FCF that the reports were premature.

“I actually haven’t been brought that fight,” Ellenberger informed FCF in September. “I actually haven’t been offered any fight yet, so as far as right now that’s not true. It’s definitely possible, but that fight hasn’t been brought to me yet.”

Ellenberger also stated that he would be interesting in fighting Sanchez, if the bout was offered, before adding:

“He’s definitely a top ten guy,” Ellenberger said last month while discussing Sanchez and what opponent might lie ahead. “A lot of the other guys are tied up right now and he’s right up there. It doesn’t really matter to me; I’ll fight anybody; whoever I need to beat to get a title shot.”
