Jake Ellenberger to Fight Diego Sanchez in UFC on Fuel 1 Headliner

Sanchez

By FCF Staff

After weeks of rumors and speculation that Diego Sanchez would be the next man to face welterweight contender Jake Ellenberger, the UFC has finally confirmed that the two will fight, February 15th. The noteworthy tilt will headline the promotion’s first televised card on FUEL TV, and will be hosted by Omaha, Nebraska.

Ellenberger (26-5) will be looking to improve on a five fight win streak when he meets Sanchez, a run for the Omaha native that includes wins over Mike Pyle, Sean Pierson and most recently Jake Shields.

Ellenbeger’s only defeat with the UFC came in September, 2009, when he lost a narrow split decision to Carlos Condit, in what was his Octagon debut.

Sanchez (23-4) is coming off back-to-back wins over Paulo Thiago and Martin Kampmann, after losing by unanimous decision to John Hathaway at UFC 114 in May, 2010. Sanchez’s last three fights marked his return to the welterweight division, after the vet was stopped by former lightweight champ BJ Penn in December, 2009.

Although some recent, non-title, main event tilts have been extended to five rounds, the UFC has announced that the February 15th bout will feature only three.
