In what could very well be a title shot eliminator, the Ultimate Fighting Championship has announced that Jake Ellenberger will fight fellow welterweight contender Martin Kampmann on June 1^st. The bout will headline the promotion’s upcoming “Ultimate Fighter Live Finale” in Las Vegas, and will be a five round contest.

Ellenberger (27-5) continued his climb up the welterweight rankings in February by working his way to a unanimous decision win over Diego Sanchez. The 26 year-old vet has won six straight fights since he lost by split decision to current interim champ Carlos Condit in September, 2009.

Kampmann (19-5) is also coming off a pivotal win, as the 29 year-old welterweight tapped out Thiago Alves with a third round, guillotine choke, at the UFC’s second FX card earlier this month. Although the well rounded fighter is 3-2 in his last five bouts, the decision losses he incurred to Jake Shields and the aforementioned Sanchez were tightly contested bouts.

Following Kampmann’s memorable victory over Alves on March 6^th, the Danish fighter was quick to call for a rematch with Condit, who he defeated by split decision in April, 2009. Upon being asked for his thoughts about Kampmann’s title shot aspirations, Ellenberger relayed to FCF shortly after:

“If anything, I think me and Kampmann should fight. I think we should fight and the winner of that gets Condit.”

“I mean, Condit and I had a close, controversial fight, but if anyone’s earned a rematch with him it’s been me,” Ellenberger added. “I’ve had six wins in a row against all high level guys. It’s hard to win two in a row in the UFC. Beating Thiago Alves is a big win, but I’d say, you know what, let’s have me and Martin fight.”
