Daniel Cormier is looking to defend the light-heavyweight title this Saturday at UFC 192, but even if he defeats Alexander Gustafsson, questions will remain about his reign.

Cormier faced his rival and now former champ,  Jon Jones, in January, and lost via unanimous decision. The decorated wrestler went on to win the title in May, however, by submitting Anthony Johnson. The title had been vacated after Jones’ well documented arrest.

Recently Cormier’s striking coach, Javier Mendez, spoke to UFC.com about the renowned fighter, and relayed the following:

“DC loves being the champ,” said Mendez. “His lifelong goal has been to be the best and prove his greatness. He’s accomplished it. He’s on top. But now he’s on a quest to keep that title. DC wants to clear out that division and make the statement that it’s just him and Jon Jones. He knows that true validation won’t happen until he beats Jones in the cage.”

Before Jones was stripped of the title, the light-heavyweight had defended the 205 belt a record 8 times. Gustafsson faced the former champ in 2013 and also lost by UD, however, many believe the contender gave Jones his toughest test to date.

UFC 192 will be hosted by the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas.
