Justin Gaethje and others have argued that Conor McGregor needs to face him, before locking up another shot at the UFC’s lightweight belt. Well, following McGregor’s win at UFC 246, his head coach John Kavanagh has made an interesting proposal in that respect.

McGregor returned to the Octagon on Saturday night at quickly took out Donald Cerrone. Gaethje faced Cerrone in September, and also stopped “Cowboy” in the opening round. The victory was the former WSOF champ’s third straight, stoppage win.

Following UFC 246, Kavanagh apppeared on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show, and while discussing the possibility of McGregor vs. Gaethje, he said this (quote via MMA Junkie):

“Justin Gaethje at 170,” Kavanagh said. “That would be my personal preference … because he’s another lightweight. Neither of them have to cut weight and the goal – I’ll be careful with my words here – the kind of vision is to get that 155-pound belt back so it’s a step towards that.”

“I don’t see the reason for him to cut weight unless there’s a significant – there has to be a belt on the line,” Kavanagh said. “Otherwise, why would he do it? So yeah, stay at this weight, don’t cut weight and then when the big one comes along, shed the last 15 pounds.”

After UFC 246, Dana White said that McGregor should wait to face the winner of the upcoming, April 18th bout between the champion Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson.
