There’s been endless speculation and talk about when and if Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor will fight, and the latter’s coach is extremely confident it will take place this year.

Nurmagomedov secured the UFC’s lightweight title in April, after defeating Al Iaquinta by decision at UFC 223. The belt was on the line, due to the fact McGregor had never defended the title, after winning it in 2016.

Recently McGregor’s head coach, John Kavanagh, attended a Q&A with MMA analyst, Robin Black. When asked about Nurmagomedov – McGregor, Kavanagh said this (quote via MMA Fighting):

“It’s the obvious fight, as his coach and as a fan,” Kavanagh said. “As a fan of MMA, it’s the fight I want to see as well. I would almost bet anything — almost bet anything — that fight happens before the end of the year.”

“I can’t imagine it not happening.”

McGregor won the 155 title in 2016 by stopping Eddie Alvarez. Since then, the only bout the star has competed in was a boxing match with Floyd Mayweather last August, which he lost via tenth round, stoppage.
