Johnson-McCall Semi-Final Rematch Booked For June 8th

McCall's (left) slugfest with Demetrious Johnson (right) was as memorable as the judges' mix-up was mind-boggling

Following their much discussed, majority draw at the second UFC on FX card earlier this month, Zuffa officials have announced today that the rematch between Demetrious Johnson and Ian McCall will take place June 8th.

The bout, which will determine who will fight Joseph Benavidez for the UFC Flyweight World Championship later in the year, will be part of the third UFC on FX event. Benavidez stopped Yasuhiro Urushitani in the second round at the UFC on FX 2 card to entrench a spot in the flyweight title fight.

The card’s venue and location will be determined by the promotion’s ongoing Harley-Davidson Hometown Throwdown contest.

McCall (11-2-1) made his Octagon debut versus Johnson having won four straight fights, after the top ranked fighter loss by unanimous decision to current UFC bantamweight champ Dominick Cruz in 2009.

Johnson and McCall engaged in a tightly contested and memorable three round bout on March 3rd, and the bout was initially declared a split decision win in Johnson’s favor. Later it was revealed, however, that there had been scoring errors and the fight was declared a majority draw (29-28, 28-28, 29-29 for Johnson).

Prior to facing McCall, Johnson (14-2) had worked his way into a title fight with Cruz by winning four consecutive bouts, but lost by unanimous decision against the champion at UFC Live 6 in October.

The UFC has also confirmed a bantamweight bout for the event, as Dustin Pague will face Jared Papazian.

Pague (10-5) is coming off a TKO loss to John Albert at the TUF 14 Finale in December, while Papazian (14-7) dropped a majority decision to Mike Easton in his last outing, at the promotion’s first UFC on FX card in January.
