Jon Jones Facing Lyoto Machida at UFC 140

Rashad Evans will have to continue to wait for his title shot, as today the Ultimate Fighting Championship has announced that former light-heavyweight champ Lyoto Machida will face reigning champion Jon “Bones” Jones at the promotion’s December 10th event in Toronto.

After Evans stopped Tito Ortiz in August and Jones tapped out Quinton Jackson last month, it appeared as though the former training partners would finally fight over the coming months. A hand injury that Evans suffered in his win over Ortiz, however, has reportedly prevented the match-up from materializing this year.

Machida (17-2) has gone 1-1 since he was knocked out by Mauricio “Shogun” Rua in May, 2010, to end his 16 fight win streak and title reign. Since then the noted striker has lost by unanimous decision to the aforementioned Jackson, and more recently in April, Machida KO’d the highly decorated Randy Couture.

Jones (14-1) has now won five straight fights since he was disqualified in his December, 2009 bout versus Matt Hamill. The Greg Jackson trained fighter stopped Rua in March to become the promotion’s light-heavyweight champion.

UFC 140 will be hosted by Toronto’s Air Canada Centre. Some of the other bouts that have been confirmed for the December 10th card include Frank Mir vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Antonio Rogerio Nogueira vs. Tito Ortiz, Brian Ebersole vs. Rory MacDonald and Mark Hominick vs. Chan Sung Jung.
