Jon Jones Says Bout at Heavyweight Possible “Maybe Later This Year”
By FCF Staff
Due to the immense talents and size of UFC Light-Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones, there has been speculation for some time now as to whether one of the planet’s top fighters would consider making a run at heavyweight. The 25 year-old fighter has acknowledged in the past that a move to heavyweight is indeed a possibility, and at a Q&A session this week Jones reported the move could come sometime in 2013.
According to a report from MMA Weekly, Jones stated Friday:
“So I think heavyweight was going to be prolonged until 2014, maybe late this year, who knows. It definitely would be a fight for the fans and I would want to fight some one as a top contender.”
Jones (17-1) is scheduled to fight fellow TUF coach Chael Sonnen on April 27th at UFC 159, and although rising Strikeforce heavyweight Daniel Cormier has been calling for a bout with Jones, the latter is planning to move down to light-heavyweight.
Cormier is a training partner of current UFC Heavyweight Champion Cain Velasquez.
Jones is coming off a two fight, 2012 campaign, which saw him score a unanimous decision over Rashad Evans and a submission victory over Vitor Belfort.
