Jose Aldo’s Coach Explains Why Alexander Volkanovski Fight Makes Sense For Former Champ

Although Jose Aldo reportedly wasn’t familiar with Alexander Volkanovski’s name, following his big win at UFC Fortaleza, the legend’s coach says a fight with the rising featherweight makes sense.

After Aldo took out Renato “Moicano” earlier this month, Volkanovski called for a bout with the former champ afterward. During the post-fight presser, however, the Brazilian star apologized for not knowing who Volkanovski was.

But, since then, Aldo’s longtime coach Andre Pederneiras spoke with Confraria da Porrada, and while doing so he had this to say (quotes via MMA Fighting):

”We wanted him to fight Alexander Volkanovski, the guy that knocked out Chad Mendes and who is the highest-ranked (fighter),” Pederneiras said. “Here’s the truth: we have the dream of fighting for the belt in our last fight, which is tough. There are only two ways for this to happen: Max Holloway moves up a division and vacates the belt, or we eliminate all the contenders.

”Moicano was the first, in our minds, and the second one would be Alexander Volkanovski, who is the fourth in the ranking today. I don’t believe Frankie Edgar (would be necessary), especially because he lost to Aldo.”

Aldo has repeatedly said that he does not intend to continue his MMA career after his current UFC contract is over. The 32-year-old fighter has two fights left on his deal.
