Former Strikeforce lightweight champ Josh Thomson will make his Octagon return at UFC on FOX 7 and will take on contender Nate Diaz. The UFC announced the bout today, which will be hosted by San Jose’s HP Pavilion Center on April 20th.

Thomson (19-5, 1 NC) hasn’t competed in the UFC since April, 2004, when he was knocked out by Yves Edwards. The 34 year-old fighter, who went on to compete in organizations like PRIDE and the aforementioned Strikeforce, is 7-3 in his last 10 bouts.

Thomson hasn’t fought since May, 2012, when he dropped a split decision to Diaz’s teammate Gilbert Melendez.

The 27 year-old Diaz (16-8), on the other hand, is coming off a unanimous decision loss to UFC Lightweight Champion Benson Henderson in December. Diaz earned the shot by scoring wins over Donald Cerrone, Jim Miller and Takanori Gomi.

UFC on FOX 7 will be headlined by a bout between Melendez and Henderson, and will also feature Daniel Cormier taking on former heavyweight champ Frank Mir.
