Although Kelvin Gastelum has dropped four of his last five bouts, the fighter remains confident he is one of the UFC’s top middleweights.

Gastelum agreed to step up as a replacement for Paulo Costa this past weekend at UFC Vegas 24, and take on former champ, Robert Whittaker. The latter proceeded to outscore Gastelum for the decision win.

Since the defeat, the 29-year-old Gastelum shared out the statement below via Twitter (text via Sherdog)

“Getting an onslaught of amazing messages and I’m glad [people] enjoyed the fight. Thank you all for sending even the slightest positive gesture and messages. I still believe I can get the job done and be one of the best! I wouldn’t say that just to say it, I believe it with my heart. I am learning so much from my opponents and I will make the necessary adjustments for the next battle. We’re on to the next one.”

With the loss, Gastelum’s record fell to 16-7, 1 NC. The former TUF winner was coming off a decision win over Ian Heinisch in February. Gastelum was ranked #8 in the UFC’s middleweight division heading into Saturday’s fight.
