Khabib Nurmagomedov Says RDA Needs to Defeat Him First Before He’s The “True Champion”

Rafael dos Anjos may have defended the lightweight title this past weekend in very impressive fashion, but according to Khabib Nurmagomedov, the Brazilian isn’t the true champion just yet…

Dos Anjos quickly stopped Donald Cerrone at UFC on FOX 17, which marked the first time he had fought since March, when he took the title from Anthony Pettis. The victory was also the fifth straight for RDA, following his decision to defeat to Nurmagomedov last April.

Recently Nurmagomedov spoke to Globo’s Combate, and while doing so, the galaxy class grappler stated (quote via Bloody Elbow.com):

“In January, I’ll get back to heavier workouts, back to training wrestling and striking. I want to be ready in March and perhaps try a title fight in Brazil against a Brazilian champion [Rafael dos Anjos],” Khabib said. “Because he wants people to say he’s the champion, but actually I’m the one who dominated him. He must defeat me so people say that he is the true champion.

“But first, I need to be fit.”

Nurmagomedov hasn’t fought since he defeated RDA, as he’s been sidelined with knee and rib injuries.
