In his address to the UFC XXX Fighters and Managers Meeting on Thursday, February 22, Larry Hazzard, commissioner of the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board, one of the most highly regarded athletic commissions, told all those assembled, "You have arrived as a legitimate sporting enterprise." After reminding everyone that back in November he had said he would see how the mixed martial arts events went in New Jersey, and then summon the promoters to a meeting to hammer out a common set of rules to govern the sport, he said that the time has now arrived to have this meeting to develop a refined and consolidated set of rules and regulations.

Thus, he has issued a call to all mixed martial arts promoters in the United States to come together, at a date and time likely in early April, and a place to be determined, to accomplish this task. The results of this meeting would be made known to all the other athletic commissions, including their joint body, the Association of Boxing Commissions. Already Lorenzo Fertitta of the UFC and Paul Smith of the IFC have publicly supported this call.

We also are covering closely a major story: the call by Larry Hazzard, commissioner of the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board, to all mixed martial arts promoters in the United States to come together to a meeting to develop a common, refined, and consolidated set of rules and regulations to govern the sport of mixed martial arts.

Wednesday, February 28 — You may have seen Dr. Margaret Goodman ringside at many boxing events in Nevada. That is because she is a ringside physician for the Nevada State Athletic Commission, as well as its neurological consultant. Today she discusses a new project, the issuing of a manual on training and fighters’ rights, that the commission will soon publish, a document Dr. Goodman says will be valuable not only to boxers, but mixed martial artists also. And Kid Peligro, the griot of grappling for the Abu Dhabi Combat Club news page, has just returned from the capital of the United Arab Emirates. Today he discusses preparations for the 2001 Submission Wrestling World Championships, to be held April 11-13, as well as this coming weekend’s first annual Arnold World Gracie Submission Championships in Columbus, Ohio, part of the annual Arnold Fitness Weekend.
