Leonard Garcia To Face Kevin Aguilar For Legacy Featherweight Title

Leonard Garcia

By Michael Hatamoto

Former WEC and UFC fighter Leonard Garcia will meet Kevin Aguilar for the vacant Legacy FC featherweight championship later this year.

Garcia vs. Aguilar is expected for Legacy FC 26 on December 6, and will be shown live on AXS TV. Former Legacy FC featherweight champion Daniel Pineda vacated the title after signing with the UFC last year.

Garcia, the Greg Jackson-trained fighter, most recently fought in the Legacy FC cage at Legacy FC 23 on September 13, where he beat Nick Gonzalez by rear naked choke submission. Aguilar also beat Gonzalez inside the Legacy FC cage, beating him in February by unanimous decision.

Garcia’s UFC career ended after losing six of his last eight fights, sometimes in horrible fashion after completely gassing, but has rebounded with two consecutive Legacy FC finishes. Going 3-0 and winning the featherweight championship might be the ideal stepping stone for Garcia to earn a return trip back to the UFC.

I don’t doubt Garcia’s natural ability, but his inability to follow a game plan – and make sure he’s always in the best shape possible – has left a lot of MMA fans disappointed. Meanwhile, I know Aguilar has looked very good with eight professional wins, but I don’t know how he’ll respond against the most difficult challenge of his career.

I think Aguilar has done a good job of finishing overwhelmed opponents, but it’s going to be significantly more dangerous to try and stand and bang with Garcia. However, if he’s able to follow his game plan and keep away from Garcia’s dangerous hands, he certainly seems to have the necessary skill to keep the fight competitive.
