Lyoto Machida Wants To Stay Busy If Jon Jones Is Injured

Lyoto Machida

By Michael Hatamoto

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida wants to stay busy in the octagon and prevent ring rust from impacting his shot at a championship.

If light heavyweight champion Jon Jones is forced to the sidelines to let his grotesque toe injury fully heal, Machida would like to fight Alexander Gustafsson. If Jones is ready to fight again in August or September, however, Machida wants a chance to recapture the championship, according to his manager, Ed Soares.

Meanwhile, Gustafsson wants a chance to fight for the light heavyweight championship, but said he would take a fight against Machida if needed. Gustafsson would like to fight ‘in a couple of months,’ which likely means something in the June-August time frame.

I applaud Machida for looking to get back into the cage sooner rather than later, especially as he looks for a chance to avenge his submission loss to Jones. I am all for a fighter trying to win a rematch fight, but I don’t think Machida is going to be able to beat Jones. Every time the Greg Jackson-trained fighter steps into the cage, we seemingly witness a better version of the fighter as he gets older.

A Jones vs. Gustafsson matchup would be a lot of fun, but there certainly is a great stylistic matchup between Gustafsson and Machida that could generate some attention.
