Manager: Conor McGregor Needs to Beat Justin Gaethje or Islam Makhachev Before Receiving Title Shot

By FCF Staff

Since Conor McGregor quickly defeated Donald Cerrone at UFC 246 last month, UFC President Dana White’s said the plan is to have the star fight for the 155 title next. But, according to the current champ’s manager, McGregor needs to record another win before a rematch with Khabib Nurmagomedov can happen.

Recently TMZ Sports caught up with Nurmagomedov’s manager, Ali Abdelaziz. When he was asked about McGregor fighting for the lightweight title next, he said this (quotes via MMA Junkie):

“You can’t get a title fight beating a guy who’s 36 years old, coming off a loss,” Abdelaziz said. “If he wants to fight a title shot like Khabib said, he needs to start fighting guys like Gaethje, like Islam Makhachev – these kind of young guys, up-and-coming, who are coming off wins. He knocked out the guy (Gaethje) just knocked out.

“Of course I’m not impressed. It was a good performance. He treated Cerrone the way he should have treated him.”

“(McGregor is) a huge fight, but at the end of the day, Khabib is all about principle,” Abdelaziz said. “Khabib is going to do what’s best for Khabib right now. The best for Khabib right now is to focus on Tony Ferguson.”

Nurmagomedov, who has repeatedly said McGregor needs to record multiple wins before earning a rematch, is booked to fight Ferguson on April 18th.

The lightweight champ faced McGregor in October, 2018 and submitted him in the opening round.
