Manager Says Khabib Nurmagomedov Could be Ready to Fight in August

Khabib Nurmagomedov

Following Khabib Nurmagomedov withdrawal from an April 18th bout with Tony Ferguson, the expectation has been the lightweight champ will return to the Octagon no sooner than September. But, recently the star’s manager, Ali Abdelaziz, reported Nurmagomedov could be ready to fight in August.

After Nurmagomedov was stranded in Russia, due to a coronavirus travel ban, the UFC booked Justin Gaethje to fight Ferguson for an interim title at UFC 249. The April 18th card never took place, however, due to the pandemic.

Since then, the consensus has been that Nurmagomedov’s next bout will not take place earlier than September. But while talking to MMA Junkie recently, Abdelaziz reported this.

“I think he can be back in August,” Abdelaziz said. “He told me originally the UFC had scheduled a San Francisco fight, I think it was August 1. He can fight there, it’s no problem. It doesn’t have to be September. But, as you know, (in) September they always have this Abu Dhabi card and I’m sure the UFC wants him to fight there.”

The UFC has announced plans to have Ferguson and Gaethje fight on May 9th. But no location for the card has been announced since.
