The striking coach for Eddie Alvarez, Mark Henry, is taking responsibility for the illegal elbow the fighter threw, which had a significant impact on his bout with Dustin Poirier.

Alvarez had moved into a dominant, full mount position on Poirier, during their headlining fight at UFC on FOX 30. But, after Alvarez threw an illegal, 12-6 elbow to Poirier’s shoulder, the bout was restarted on its feet. Not long after, Poirier proceeded to finish Alvarez with strikes.

Since then, Henry spoke with MMA Junkie, and the renowned coach had this to say about Alvarez’s use of the illegal technique.

“On a blame scale of 1 to 10, it’s 100 on me,” said Henry

“He definitely did what he saw me do. Definitely my fault. I definitely wasn’t meaning to be cheap at all.”

“I’m not stupid. I’ve been doing this a long time. I know he can’t do a top elbow. Out of the hundreds and hundreds of fights that I’ve done, every single time they say you can’t do that elbow.”

Last May, Alvarez and Poirier’s first bout was declared a no-contest, after the latter could not continue due to an illegal knee he was hit with.
