Marvin Vettori has a lot of work to do before he books another fight with Israel Adesanya. But, the middleweight has no doubt he can defeat the reigning champ, despite failing twice before.

Vettori battled Adesanya for the first time back in 2018, and dropped a close, split decision to the star. The contender proceeded to work his way into a title fight this past June, by winning five straight. This time around, however, Adesanya won the bout via unanimous decision.

Up next, Vettori (17-5-1) is scheduled to fight Paulo Costa this coming Saturday at UFC Vegas 41.  A win over the top contender would be a big step forward in the path back to a title shot.

While talking to MMA Junkie ahead of the fight, the 28-year-old made it clear he’s more than confident he can defeat Adesanya.

“I did a mistake and I paid for it,” Vettori said. “But, you know, I really realized I can really beat this guy and I’m actually better than this guy. Two days after it’s like, ‘If we redo this fight, I’m going to beat this guy. Clean.’ But that’s it. Now I have to just reclaim my spot, and I feel like this is a fight (against Costa) that regardless of being champion or not, I would have won. I would have won this fight.

“I’m definitely thinking title and I know for a fact I’m going to face again Adesanya. I just want to fight the best, be the best and eventually claim my spot to be the best and win the title.”

Costa (13-1), meanwhile, has yet to compete since he was stopped by Adesanya in September, 2020. The 30-year-old had won five, straight, UFC fights before fighting the champion.
