Vet Continues to Entertain and Prove Critics Wrong

By Kelsey Mowatt

For several years now, bouts featuring Matt “The Immortal” Brown have been on the “can’t miss” list for most MMA fans, due to the ferocious pace and aggression he brings into every fight. The TUF vet would win some, and lose some, but the result seemed secondary to the fact that Brown’s fights were ridiculously entertaining.

Since he was submitted by Seth Baczynski in November, 2011, however, not only has Brown continued to leave fans on the edge of their seats, but the Ohio fighter has won five straight bouts. If his vicious knockout of Mike Swick last December wasn’t impressive enough, Brown has the MMA world buzzing once again, with his thrilling victory over rising prospect Jordan Mein last night.

Brown had Mein in trouble early, then got dropped by a series of painful body shots, before putting the welterweight on defensive with a triangle-choke attempt. The 32 year-old came out firing in round two, and not long after, he had put Mein away with a series of brutal punches and elbows. The memorable and violent bout also earned Brown and Mein “Fight of the Night” honors. No surprises there.

Now, considering that Brown isn’t currently positioned in the UFC’s top ten welterweight rankings, it’s unlikely Georges St. Pierre or Johny Hendricks have begun mapping out strategies to beat the vet just yet. But, that doesn’t mean Brown believes he’s a gatekeeper in the division or just a talented journeymen, far from it.

Speaking after last night’s UFC on FOX 7 win, Brown relayed that “I wouldn’t be coming to work every day if I wasn’t thinking about a title shot. I believe my time is coming.” The words likely sat well with UFC President Dana White, of course, who has stated in the past that every UFC competitor should be gunning for a title shot. In the case of Brown, however, it’s much easier to imagine fighting for the belt, when you’ve won five straight and are coming off stoppage wins over two extremely dangerous fighters.

Brown also took a shot at the always popular MMA media, who according to him, “don’t believe” he’s good enough to challenge for the belt. While some pundits may in fact think that’s true, if the gritty vet continues to bomb through opponents like he’s been doing, they’ll have no choice but to recognize him as a legit contender. Case in point, and in the interest of full disclosure, I, a member of the infallible MMA media, had Mein winning last night’s fight.

Maybe a bout with Demian Maia, Josh Koscheck, or the once again retired Nick Diaz is in order? To see whether Brown can continue his ascension up the welterweight ranks and move into title contention? All three are currently ranked in the UFC’s top ten and none of them are booked for fights. Adding that fans would jump to see any three of those match-ups, of course, goes without saying.
