Matt Mitrione has released a statement apologizing for the verbal rant he directed at transgender fighter Fallon Fox earlier this month, which dominated headlines for several days and resulted in the fighter being reprimanded by the UFC.

While appearing on “The MMA Hour”, a few days after stopping Philip De Fries at UFC on FUEL TV 9, Mitrione referred to Fox as a “sociopathic, disgusting freak”. Today the 34 year-old heavyweight apologize for the remarks by saying:

“I want to apologize for my hurtful comments about Fallon Fox and a group within our society, which, in truth, I know nothing about. I now know there’s an important line between expressing an opinion on a subject and being hurtful and insensitive. I crossed that line by expressing my views in an ugly, rude and inappropriate manner.”

The fighter also added that “I am embarrassed I chose to express myself in such a fashion and am looking forward to living up to this apology through my future actions, words and conduct.”

In addition to the apology, Mitrione also plans to work with the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender) community in the future.

The statement comes shortly after the UFC announced that Mitrione will fight Brendan Schaub on July 27th, despite recently announcing that his contract was suspended. Mitrione was also required to pay a fine for the incident, however, the amount was not disclosed.
