Media Watch: Alistair Overeem Wants to Fight Anyone Once He Returns

UFC heavyweight Alistair Overeem

By Michael Hatamoto

Alistair Overeem isn’t allowed to fight until December, but the former Strikeforce and K-1 Grand Prix champion wants to be matched up with a top 10 opponent.

Here is what Glenn Robinson, Overeem’s manager from Authentic Sports Management, had to say recently on MMAWeekly Radio:

“First of all, he would have loved to have had the opportunity to fight for the title, but Alistair is a fighter, and as a fighter he will fight whoever they put in front of him.  Reality is, he’s training extraordinarily hard, and whoever gets in front of him is going to meet a completely different Alistair. This guy is just dedicated to rebuilding and rededicating himself.”

Training at the Blackzilians camp in Florida, Overeem is “in great shape” and he’s reportedly in “better shape now than when he joined” his US-based camp and sports management.

Overeem has tried to bait heavyweight champion Junior Dos Santos into a verbal war of words, but Dos Santos is focused on his rematch with Cain Velasquez.

Since the Nevada State Athletic Commission nixed Overeem’s chances of being licensed early, he’ll have to wait until December to enter the UFC cage.  Specifically, the Dutch kickboxer won’t be able to reapply for a fight license until December 27, nine months from his failed drug test.

Since he’s been training steadily throughout the suspension, I expect Overeem to jump back into the cage as soon as he’s given a fight.
