Media Watch: Shane Carwin Looks Forward to Roy Nelson Heavyweight Clash

UFC heavyweight Shane Carwin

By Michael Hatamoto

Former UFC interim heavyweight champion Shane Carwin looks forward to a teaching stint on The Ultimate Fighter, which will also lead to a fight with Roy Nelson.

In his latest blog post, Carwin discussed how his team is putting together a coaching staff for the show, and how the long lay off actually has helped him.

“This will be the first time in my adult life that I wont be working. I will just be focusing on developing a team to win the show and focusing on preparing to knock Roy Nelson out. That is my new job and my new passion. I know Roy likes to be the UFC’s Jester but he better know this is not a joke for me. He can keep striving for being average, I am pushing myself and those around me to find the American Dream. The dream that comes from lots of hard work and sacrifice, no gimmicks necessary.”

I think Carwin will make the better coach on TUF 16, but believe Nelson will be able to win when they fight. Carwin has only stepped into the UFC octagon three times since March 2010, as he beat Frank Mir but lost to Brock Lesnar and Junior Dos Santos.

Meanwhile, Nelson has lost three of his last five fights, but picked up two KO/TKO finishes while proving to be an extremely difficult fighter to finish. However, the fighter had this to say after being offered a chance to coach TUF:

“When I found out I was going to be a TUF coach I was like ‘Wow me!’ When I found out I was coaching against Shane Carwin I was so happy to get a chance to compete against this guy. As for being in the same room as him, I try not hang out with people that make me feel icky on the inside but, to coach TUF, I will make an exception.”

TUF 16 will debut in September on FX, and the finale will take place in December.
