Miletich Fighters Earn Toughman Titles

Miletich Fighters Earn Toughman Titles

DAVENPORT, Iowa — UFC veteran Jeremy Horn [pictured] displayed some of his improved stand-up abilities over the weekend, defeating three opponents en route to winning his first-ever Toughman championship.

Horn, who has been mentioned as a possible opponent next month for UFC middleweight champion Tito Ortiz, used superior accuracy and endurance to claim the heavyweight (185 to 400 pound) division.
Another Miletich Martial Arts Center fighter, Robbie Lawler, won four bouts to capture the middleweight title. Lawler, a promising 18-year-old wrestler with power in both hands, will compete in the MMA Nationals on January 20th in Springfield, Illinois.
Both fighters pocketed $1,000 for their efforts, although Horn stated he entered the contest for the "experience.".
"It’s great to win and all, but the reason for competing was to continue to work on my stand-up," Horn said. "I think I did alright, but there’s plenty of room for improvement…I’m still working on it.".
Ironically, Horn had to beat two other MMA fighters to claim the title. He used body shots to twice drop Dennis Reed, an Extreme Challenge and DangerZone veteran, to win a semifinal decision. Horn then outlasted a bigger (245 pounds to 205) Paul Wells in the finals. Wells, a former Extreme Challenge fighter who once fought Bobby Hoffman for the EC heavyweight title, used his size well early, but fatigue played a major role in his demise. Wells advanced to the Finals with KO victories in 6 and 11 seconds.
