Nate Marquardt will make his Octagon return, nearly two years from the day of his last UFC performance, as the promotion has announced that the welterweight has agreed to fight Jake Ellenberger at the March 16th, UFC 158 event.

Ellenberger was originally scheduled to fight Johny Hendricks; however, the latter was moved into a bout with Carlos Condit, after Rory MacDonald was forced to withdraw from the card with a neck injury.

Marquardt’s return was first reported by the Canadian Press and then confirmed by UFC officials.

Marquardt (32-11) is coming off a unanimous decision loss to Tarec Saffiedine in January, after securing the Strikeforce welterweight title last July, by knocking out Tyron Woodley.

The former middleweight contender hasn’t competed in the UFC since March, 2011, when he worked his way to a UD win over Dan Miller.

Marquardt exited the promotion later that year when he failed to receive clearance for a bout with Rick Story. It was later revealed that Marquardt’s withdrawal was tied to issues he was incurring with testosterone-replacement-therapy, and that he had received clearance for the treatments in the past.

Ellenberger (28-6) is coming off a UD win over Jay Hieron in October, after being stopped by Martin Kampmann at a TUF Finale card in June.

UFC 158 will be hosted by Montreal’s Bell Centre and will feature welterweight champion Georges St.Pierre versus Nick Diaz in the main event.
