Neil Magny believes his win at UFC Vegas 8 should deliver him a bout with a top ten ranked welterweight. But, the rugged vet is down to face the man he was originally scheduled to fight Saturday, Geoff Neal.

Magny and Neal were booked to fight this weekend until the latter incurred serious, medical issues and had to withdraw. Robbie Lawler agreed to step in and fight Magny instead.

In the co-main event, Magny outscored Lawler with his clinch game and grappling, and cruised to a decision win. After the bout, Neal tweeted out that he would see Magny “soon”.

While talking to the media following his win,  Magny argued a top ten ranked opponent should come next. But, when asked if he’d be willing to fight Neal, who is ranked #11, the 33-year-old said this (quotes via MMA Junkie).

“Yeah, let’s go. (Neal) was the one that was scheduled for this fight,” Magny said. “And that’s kind of the frustrating thing going into this fight: Robbie Lawler was on my radar for years. It popped up on my Facebook a couple of weeks ago that, when he was the champion, I was one of the guys in the group to potentially fight him. … I knew what I was capable of against a guy like Robbie Lawler. It’s just frustrtating that it took this long to finally get that fight.

“The thing that goes with the fight now is everyone wants to say, ‘Oh, well, he’s past his prime. He fought too late. He fought bad.’ No, I fought well. I went out there and did what I knew I could do against a guy like Robbie Lawler whether it was tonight or five years ago. Fighting Geoff Neal, I think, secures it for me, letting me know I can take out these guys that are on hot win streaks and younger guys, as well.”

With the win on Saturday, Magny extended his winning streak to three and his overall record to 24-7. He is currently ranked #14 in the UFC’s welterweight division.
