Nsac Commissioner Passes

NSAC Commissioner Passes
Dr. Elias Ghanem

Dr. Elias Ghanem, chairman of the Nevada State Athletic Commission, is dead at the age of 62. He died at his home early Monday morning after a protracted bout with cancer. He had been diagnosed with kidney cancer 3 years ago.

A proponent for the sanctioning of MMA in Nevada, Dr. Ghanem was unable to attend the historic NSAC session on July 23, 2001 that voted unanimously to sanction the sport in Nevada, he teleconferenced into the meeting from San Diego where he was receiving cancer treatment.

Ghanem, a Lebanese immigrant who came to the U.S. in 1963, was appointed to the Commission in 1987, and served the last 4 years as Commissioner. He was a champion of health and safety issues in the fight game, and was the driving force in instituting HIV, AIDS, and hepatitis testing for fighters.

Dr. Ghanem settled in Las Vegas in 1971, where he honed his skills in emergency medicine. After working for a period in a local hospital, he opened a 24-hour clinic that eventually spawned several other clinics. Although Dr. Ghanem earned the moniker, "physician to the stars," for his high-profile, star-studded patient list which was reported to include the likes of Michael Jackson and Elvis Presley, he also treated homeless and indigent patients as well, without regard to their lack of funds. If there was one word that repeatedly arises in descriptions of Dr. Ghanem, it is "compassionate." The man definitely cared.

Our deepest sympathy goes out to Dr. Ghanem’s family and friends.
