NSAC Says Alistair Overeem Failed Drug Test, UFC 146 Title Fight in Doubt

Alistair Overeem’s May 26th bout with UFC Heavyweight Champion Junior dos Santos could be in jeopardy, after the Nevada State Athletic Commission has announced today that the fighter has allegedly failed a pre-fight drug test.

According to an email sent out today by NSAC Executive Director Keith Kizer, Overeem has tested positive for an elevated level of testosterone vs. epitestosterone at a ratio of 10/1.

In order to get a license from the NSAC, a fighter’s T/E ratio cannot reportedly exceed 6/1. A normal adult male carries a 1/1 ratio.

As a result of Overeem’s test, the fighter will have to have a B sample cleared  and stand before the NSAC before he can compete at UFC 146. The May 26th event is scheduled to take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Overeem, dos Santos, Frank Mir, Cain Velasquez, Roy Nelson and Antonio Silva were all brought in for pre-UFC 146 testing recently. Every fighter except Overeem was cleared.

In December, Overeem was only granted a conditional license to fight Brock Lesnar at UFC 141, after he missed a pre-fight drug test that was requested by the NSAC. Although the former Strikeforce champion proceeded to pass a test before and after he stopped Lesnar at UFC 141, Overeem had two more random tests assigned as part of his conditional license.

The test which was conducted last Tuesday evidently was one of those random tests.

Neither the UFC or Overeem’s camp has made any official announcement regarding the alleged test results.
