Nutritionist Mike Dolce in Favor of Earlier Weigh-Ins, Wants More Weight Classes

Mike Dolce

Renowned nutritionist and trainer Mike Dolce is a proponent of earlier weigh-ins, but the former fighter also believes the UFC should bring in more weight divisions.

The California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) enacted new weigh-in procedures earlier this year, whereby fighters can weigh-in in the morning of the day prior to a fight, rather than at 4 PM. In doing so, fighters have more time to rehydrate for the bout. Dehydration diminishes a fighter’s performance and motor skills, as well as their ability to absorb punishment. In extreme cases, it can lead to serious medical issues.

While speaking to MMA Fighting.com recently, Dolce said he is in favor of earlier weigh-ins, and believes fighters will not take the extra time to attempt larger cuts. But, the fitness expert also believes the UFC should introduce more weight classes:

“Every 10 pounds should be the maximum jump until we get to those higher body mass athletes,” Dolce said.

Currently, there is a 15 pound difference between lightweight and welterweight, and a 20 pound difference between middleweight and light-heavyweight.
