Opinion: Great to See WSOF Jump on Women’s MMA Bandwagon

Jessica Aguilar

By Michael Hatamoto

The World Series of Fighting (WSOF) MMA promotion has signed female superstar Jessica Aguilar, signaling an interest in developing its women’s MMA ranks.

Expect to see Aguilar make her WSOF debut sometime in early 2014, though we’ll have to wait and see who else the WSOF signs.

WSOF used its official Twitter feed to send out this tweet:

Considering she is the first female fighter to sign with the WSOF, many are wondering why she didn’t choose Invicta Fighting Championship. However, with InvictaFC only hosting a few fight cards per year, and the potential of fighting frequently on national TV with WSOF, the opportunity was likely too good to pass up.

I hope WSOF President Ray Sefo and company are able to sign legitimate opponents to face a fighter of Aguilar’s caliber.

I think Aguilar is a great signing for the WSOF, as the former Bellator fighter is riding a seven-fight winning streak and is now 16-4. The 31-year-old will provide credibility to the WSOF’s efforts to build its ranks, especially since Aguilar holds two victories against long-time Japanese women’s superstar, Megumi Fujii.

Despite the success of women’s MMA, especially with the UFC onboard, it’s still an extremely turbulent time for female fighters.

UFC President Dana White noted women are now able to step into the Octagon because of champion Ronda Rousey’s rise to stardom. Meanwhile, Bellator MMA, the No. 2 US promotion, chose to disband women’s MMA – at least for the foreseeable future.

I am glad to see promotions like WSOF give the women a chance to compete, and with fight cards shown on the NBC Sports Network, it is a great opportunity they should make the best of.
