Opinion: Jordan Mein Enters The UFC Welterweight Picture

The focus of UFC 158 was on the three main card welterweight fights, but something extremely noteworthy happened during the FX portion of the prelims.

Canadian Jordan Mein, just 23-years-old, handed wiry veteran Dan Miller his first career stoppage loss at 4:42 of round one.

Mein was able to work his way out of a dangerous armbar submission attempt by Miller, and was able to defend and escape to his feet.  Once back on the feet, Mein was able to use his strong Muay Thai and kickboxing skillset to damage Miller before dropping the former middleweight contender with a solid right hook.

Mein is just 23 years old but already has 35 professional fights on his resume – though UFC 158 was his Octagon debut, and many MMA journalists expected Miller to pick up a decision victory.

Mein has fought very tough opponents in the past, including the likes of Marius Zaromskis, Joe Riggs, Jason High, Tyron Woodley, Rory MacDonald, and Evangelista Santos – but Miller was expected to be able to use his overall MMA game and experience to punish Mein.

Despite being the first to finish Miller inside the UFC octagon – and fighting very tough competition in the past – I don’t think UFC matchmaker Joe Silva should rush Mein’s development.  I’d like to see him fight Rick Story sometime in the summer, as it would be a tough fight and still gives him plenty of time to mature further.

At just 23 years old, Mein has plenty of time to work his way up the ladder and hopefully evolve into the next major Canadian MMA superstar.
