Opinion: Should UFC Sign Lyman Good?

Former Bellator welterweight champion Lyman Good is a free agent and can sign with another MMA promotion, after fighting inside the Bellator cage four years.

The Tiger Schulmann’s MMA product finished his Bellator career at 8-3 and could end up back in the No. 2 MMA promotion again in the future.

The 28-year-old has proven to be durable, compiling a 15-3 record and all losses by way of decision – and could make an excellent signing for an organization like World Series of Fighting or One FC. WSOF is looking for talented US fighters that won’t cost too much, and Good could be marketed to expanding Asian markets.

Good served as the Bellator welterweight champion after winning the Bellator Season 1 Welterweight Tournament, finishing Omar de la Cruz in the first round. However, his next fight – the first attempted title defense – Good was beaten by still champion Ben Askren – Good would bounce back and has gone 5-2 since that Askren loss.

Here is what Good said in a recent press release:

“The entire team at Bellator has been really good to me throughout my career and now they’ve given me the green light to go and fight anywhere I want. I don’t know where I’ll end up next, but I’m going to keep fighting, and … maybe I’ll be back at Bellator at some point.”

Ultimately, I think it would be fun to see Good in the UFC, but the No. 1 MMA promotion doesn’t need to sign Good if the price tag is too high.

Would he be able to compete with the top UFC welterweights if given a chance? Since I don’t think he could beat anyone in the top 10, seeing him fight someone like Erick Silva, Dong Hyun Kim, Tyron Woodley, or Matt Brown would be a lot of fun – but not very critical to the welterweight division.

Full Contact Fighter will keep you updated regarding any developments regarding Good’s expected signing in the near future.
