Opinion: Time For ‘Fancy Pants’ In The UFC

Lyle 'Fancy Pants' Beerbohm (left)

By Michael Hatamoto

The UFC is cutting a steady stream of fighters from its roster, but dedicated, skilled fighters are trying to claw their way into the No. 1 MMA promotion.

Lyle ‘Fancy Pants’ Beerbohm has patiently waited for his invitation into the UFC, with training partners such as Cody McKenzie, Mike Hanks, and Mike Chiesa already fighting in the UFC.  The former Sikjitsu fighter now coaches and trains at Spokane BJJ, where he holds a BJJ black belt and strong wrestling background.

Until the UFC calls, Beerbohm will continue to look for victories on the regional Pacific Northwest circuit and in a budding national MMA promotion.

Beerbohm, a former methamphetamine addict and convict, has collected a solid 22-2 pro fight record since starting his MMA career in 2007.  Fancy Pants has beaten the likes of Marcus Aurelio, Vitor Ribeiro, Duane Ludwig, and Rafaello Oliveira – with consecutive losses to Pat Healy and Shinya Aoki.

Since the 2011 submission loss to Aoki, Beerbohm has gone 6-0 and waits for the chance to jump into the UFC octagon.

Beerbohm next fights Jacob Volkmann during World Series of Fighting 3, set for Las Vegas on June 14, and deserves a shot in the UFC with a win.  However, with a multi-fight deal signed with the WSOF, it’ll be great to see Beerbohm inside the cage on TV against decent quality competition.

Volkmann has gone 1-2 in his last three UFC fights, losing by submission to Bobby Green, submitting Shane Roller, and losing by submission to Paul Sass.  It will be interesting to see what type of ground battle will ensue when Beerbohm tries to turn the match into a grappling affair, as Volkmann has a good wrestling background.
