Opinion: Time to Shift Focus Back to Jon Jones vs. Alexander Gustafsson

The UFC had an extremely busy past six weeks, but it’s now time to shift focus to the upcoming light heavyweight championship fight between Jon Jones and Alexander Gustafsson.

Jones vs. Gustafsson is the main event of UFC 165 on Sept. 21, taking place at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Canada.

Jones has learned how to use his strong physical strength and freakish physique mixed with growing striking abilities and already strong grappling. Gustafsson has won nine of his 15 professional MMA fights by knockout, but trying to find boxing range with Jones will be extremely difficult.

Jones won the title from Mauricio “Shogun” Rua at UFC 128 in 2011, and then has defended it five consecutive times. Meanwhile, Gustafsson has won six straight since losing to Phil Davis at UFC 112 in April 2010 – and has looked good in his victories against Shogun, Thiago Silva, and Vladimir Matyushenko.

I think Jones can sometimes bug people with a seemingly cocky attitude, even though the 26-year-old works hard in the gym and comes prepared to fight. I like Gustafsson as a fighter, but I don’t think he has the required skillset to beat Jones, whether this fight stays on the feet or turns into a grappling match.

Meanwhile, Glover Teixeira, who gets next crack at the light heavyweight title, believes Jones will win – and that’s the fight he is looking for. I agree with Teixeira’s pre-fight prediction and also believe Jones will beat a very game Gustafsson, and wonder how many more fights Jones will have at light heavyweight.
