Opinion: UFC Needs To Match Fabricio Werdum Against Daniel Cormier

Fabricio Werdum

By Michael Hatamoto

UFC heavyweights Fabricio Werdum and Daniel Cormier are both high profile fighters looking to make a big splash in the heavyweight division.

UFC President Dana White said Werdum recently requested the fight, and White said “we’ll see what happens” regarding the possible matchup.

In his most recent fight, Werdum looked extremely solid against MMA veteran Antonio “Rodrigo” Nogueira, winning in the second round by armbar submission. Meanwhile, Cormier battered former heavyweight champion Frank Mir over three rounds to win a unanimous decision in Cormier’s UFC debut.

Both heavyweights are near the top of the division rankings, and Cormier doesn’t appear to be in a big rush to leave the HW division.

I would have a hard time picking against Werdum if the two heavyweights meet up, as I believe Cormier would stuff the take downs but Werdum would pick him apart on the feet. However, I could also see Cormier using his excellent wrestling to take Werdum down and slowly grind him out over three rounds.

I think Cormier truly is better suited for a weight cut down to the light heavyweight division in 2014, but that’s something he’ll need to discuss with his camp. It makes no sense for Cormier to eliminate potential heavyweight championship contenders if he’s unwilling to fight teammate and friend, Cain Velasquez, as the AKA fighter still holds the heavyweight belt.

With all of that said, I think Werdum cannot be stopped until he earns a crack at the championship in late 2013 or early 2014.
