While the debate continues as to who won last night’s UFC 150 headliner between lightweight champ Benson Henderson and former champ Frankie Edgar, it’s clear that the promotion is looking to move on from the memorable series. Following the event, UFC President Dana White confirmed that Nate Diaz will challenge Henderson next for the belt, despite last night’s controversial decision.

“Let me just say this, I’m not a judge okay? Ben Henderson won the fight tonight; he retained his title, and that’s the end of it,” White said in the post UFC 150 presser, while discussing Henderson’s split decision victory.  “I know there’s a lot of people who scored it differently, but I tell these guys all the time, if you don’t like the way judges score it, don’t let it get there.”

While some fans may be clamoring for a third fight between the two, the UFC’s decision to move on isn’t surprising. A third fight at this juncture, particularly with Henderson ahead 2-0, might not be welcomed by the mainstream majority.

This aside, does White believe that Edgar’s failure to defeat Henderson is evidence of the fact that he should drop to featherweight?

“He’s always proved that he can stay at 155,” said White, who has stated in the past that the 5’6 tall Edgar should consider fighting at featherweight. “There’s never been a case where Frankie’s not good enough to be at 155; he’s not tough enough to be at 55, he’s not talented enough to be at 55 or that he’s not big enough at 155. I just think that at 145 he’s a monster. But he likes 55; he wanted this fight bad, we gave it to him because I respect him so much and he went out there and fought his ass off.”

Clearly, Edgar could quickly reinsert himself into the title shot mix by scoring another big win and if Diaz were to defeat Henderson. If Henderson continues to be the champion, however, Edgar’s championship prospects may be hindered. In other words, the timing may be perfect for Edgar to make a run at 145.

As for Edgar, when asked to comment on last night’s decision, the 14-3 fighter responded.

“It don’t really matter what I think at this point. He got the decision, I can be pissed off but it’s not going to change. It is what it is.”
