Alexander Gustafsson Says Giving Jon Jones Immediate Title Shot “Wouldn’t be Fair”

Daniel Cormier and Anthony Johnson reportedly don’t believe Jon Jones should receive a title shot when he returns to the UFC, and neither does Alexander Gustafsson.

Jones was booked to face Cormier at UFC 200 in July, but was pulled from the event, after he was flagged for an estrogen blocker and an aromatase inhibitor. More recently, however, it’s been reported that Jones is facing a much shorter suspension than originally expected. The former light-heavyweight champ has also said that he expects to be back in the cage “soon”.

As a result, there’s been a lot of discussion and debate as to whether Jones will receive a title shot when he’s cleared to return. While Jones secured the interim title this past April by defeating Ovince Saint Preux, due to his well publicized legal and now USADA issues, the 29 year-old has fought just twice since 2014.

Recently Cormier reported that both he and Johnson don’t believe Jones should be booked for a title shot when he returns, and on the “MMA Hour” Monday, Gustafsson said this (quote via MMA Fighting.com):

“It wouldn’t be fair, giving him a title shot,” Gustafsson said. “I’m not saying I’m going to get it. I’m just saying, after everything that happened, it’s not fair to other fighters too, who’ve been working their asses off and they’ve been fighting each other. So, not a title shot right away. Just give him a fun fight first and that’s it.”

Johnson is coming off a vicious, KO win over Glover Teixeira last month and is currently ranked #1 at 205. Gustafssson, meanwhile, decisioned Jan Blachowicz earlier this month and is ranked #2.
