Alistair Overeem Off UFC 146 Card; Frank Mir vs. Junior dos Santos Official
By FCF Staff
After widespread speculation throughout the MMA world as to when and if Frank Mir would be tapped as a replacement for Alistair Overeem at UFC 146, the promotion announced Friday that indeed the heavyweight will fight champion Junior dos Santos on May 26th.
UFC President Dana White made the announcement via Twitter stating:
“May 26th is now Mir vs JDS for the HW title in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand.”
The change comes just days before Overeem will stand in front of the Nevada State Athletic Commission on April 24th, to address a pre-fight drug test which indicated he had a reported 14/1 testosterone to epitestosterone ratio.
Overeem is currently not licensed by the NSAC to compete in the state. UFC 146 will be hosted by the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
Mir (16-5) has been awarded another shot at the title after scoring consecutive wins over Mirko Filipovic, Roy Nelson and most recently Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira.
The heavyweight had been scheduled to fight fellow former champion Cain Velasquez at UFC 146.
Yesterday’s announcement did not include any information as to whether Velasquez will still compete on the upcoming card.
How many shots does Frank get at the title???
