Bellator 66: Eddie Alvarez Blasts Shinya Aoki
By FCF Staff
It may have taken over three years to do it, but Eddie Alvarez was finally able to avenge his December, 2008, submission loss to Shinya Aoki tonight at Bellator 66, as the lightweight needed just over two minutes to stop the DREAM champ.
Moments after Aoki failed to take Alvarez to the mat, the noted striker dropped the submission wizard to the mat with a short right uppercut. Making the most of his opportunity, Alvarez pounced on Aoki from above and landed several more punches which dazed the veteran fighter.
Although Aoki’s corner had already thrown in the towel, the bout continued, as the Japanese fighter attempted to cover up from his opponent’s barrage. Alvarez’s assault was too much, however, and the fight was promptly brought to a close by the referee.
In the middleweight tourney semifinals, Andreas Spang came from behind and floored Brian Rogers with a devastating left hook, while Maiquel Falcao worked his way to a unanimous decision win over a resilient Vyacheslav Vasilevsky.
And in the promotion’s lightweight semis, Rick Hawn put away Lloyd Woodard with a hard right hand shortly into round two, and Brent Weedman worked his way to a split decision win over noted striker Thiago Michel.
