Bellator’s Scott Coker Says UFC’s Reebok Deal “Should be Against Labor Laws”

At a time when Bellator continues to draw praise from its fighters for its policy regarding sponsors, Scott Coker’s admitted the UFC’s uniform deal with Reebok “baffles” him.

As a result of the UFC’s agreement with Reebok, fighters are no longer allowed to promote sponsors during fight week. Fighters do receive compensation, as a result of the agreement, but many veteran fighters have reported they were earning more, before the Reebok deal was implemented.

Bellator, meanwhile, has no policy regarding sponsorships. Coker was a guest on this week’s “MMA Hour”, and while discussing the UFC’s highly debated deal with Reebok, the Bellator President said this (quote via MMA Fighting):

“Listen, they’re independent contractors. How they’re forced to wear a uniform, to this day, still baffles me,” Coker said. “It should be against the labor laws or something, because you have to wear this sponsor thing? You have to wear this certain uniform when you fight? To me, they’re independent contractors. They should go out and get whatever sponsors they want, and if Ryan Bader or whoever went out and made a million dollars in sponsorship, good for you. We don’t touch any of that.”

Recently Ryan Bader reported that he’s back to “the heyday” with sponors, on account of signing with Bellator.
