Bryan Caraway Replaces Injured Eric Perez Against Johnny Bedford At UFC 159

Bryan Caraway

By Timothy J. Gilbert

A severe staph infection has forced bantamweight Eric Perez out of his upcoming bout against Johnny Bedford at UFC 159 allowing Bryan Caraway to step in on late notice.

UFC officials proclaimed the change on Monday, confirming Caraway as the replacement. The match will take place on Saturday, April 28, only five days after the announcement.

Former NCAA Division I wrestler Bedford (19-9-1) is 8-1 in his last nine fights and is coming off of three stoppage wins over Frank Gomez, Louis Gaudinot and Marco Vinicius. He is looking to secure his third UFC victory.

Caraway (17-6) is attempting to rebound off of a split decision loss to Takeya Mizugaki at UFC on Fuel TV 8. The “Team Alpha Male” combatant brings the experience of 15 professional submission victories into the cage this Saturday.

23 year old Mexican upstart, Perez (13-4), was riding an eight fight win streak that included six finishes. He is 3-0 under UFC sponsorship finishing every opponent within the first round, but a staph infection in his leg has forced him to withdraw.

UFC 159 takes places at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. The Bedford-Caraway bout is set to headline the preliminary fights scheduled to air on FX.
