Cain Velasquez, Javier Mendez Respond to Dana White’s Criticisms About AKA

UFC Heavyweight Champion Cain Velasquez

Earlier in the week, UFC President Dana White accused the American Kickboxing Academy of being in the “stone age’, when it comes to their training practices, and now the team has responded.

White recently sat down with Setanta Sports, and while discussing the topic of injuries, the outspoken exec stated (quote via UFC.com):

“Some of the camps are still in the stone ages and need to be brought up to date,” White said. “AKA is one of those places. You’ve got Cain Velasquez, our heavyweight champion, who’s always hurt. Those guys go to war every day.”

Well, in the aforementioned UFC story, the promotion’s heavyweight champ, Cain Velasquez, defended his team and the training regiment at AKA:

“He might say ‘stone age,’ but I say, ‘old school,’” Velasquez said. “The best way to get ready for a fight is to spar. So I’m going to keep doing what we’ve been doing here. That’s the best way to get ready. We don’t come into the gym thinking that we’re going to get hurt. We just do our work and get ready to fight.”

AKA coach Javier Mendez also called on White to come to AKA, so that he can see how the team runs practice. Mendez relayed that the gym takes “every precaution necessary” and that further, fighters like Luke Rockhold, Daniel Cormier and Velasquez have become UFC stars as a result of their training.

Velasquez has not fought since October, 2013, now due to injuries, and last November, Fabricio Werdum stopped Mark Hunt to become interim champ. Velasquez and Werdum are scheduled to fight June 13th, at UFC 188.
