Canelo Alvarez

Not only is Canelo Alvarez’s May 5th rematch with Gennady Golovkin off, the boxing star has been suspended for six months, by the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

The organization has handed Alvarez the suspension after the Mexican fighter tested positive for the banned substance clenbuterol, in out-of-competition tests this past February (report via MMA Fighting). Alvarez and his team have claimed the positive test was likely due to tainted meat the fighter ate.

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has determined that low levels of clenbuterol can be detected in athletes, as a result of food contamination.

Alvarez’s suspension is reportedly, retroactive to February 17th.

Golovkin is now expected to face Vanes Martirosyan on May 5th, according to a report from the L.A. Times.

Alvarez and Golovkin fought in September, and the fight was ruled a split draw.
