Chael Sonnen Leaving Middleweight to Fight “Grudge Weight”
By Michael Hatamoto
MMA veteran Chael Sonnen is reportedly interested in moving up in weight to meet an unnamed opponent at a 200-lb. “grudge weight,” as the UFC remains quiet about a potential fight announcement.
Here is what Sonnen recently tweeted:
It’s not “catch weight” it’s a “grudge weight.” I’ll fight him at a GRUDGE WEIGHT OF 200lbs. I don’t care about him enough to cut to 185.

It very well could be a fight against Wanderlei Silva, an opponent that would help sell fights as the two fighters have exchanged words on numerous occasions. Sonnen would likely be able to survive an early storm and thoroughly control Silva on the ground – but it’s still a fight fans would pay to see.
Sonnen is still a competitive middleweight, but the UFC and MMA fans are uninterested in a trilogy fight between the American Gangster and champion Anderson Silva. To prevent Sonnen from eliminating potential middleweight title contenders from the mix, it’s a smart decision if he considers moving to light heavyweight or catchweight fights.
If Sonnen truly is in the twilight of his career, it’s now the perfect time for him to accept high-profile fights that will help him get paid.
