Cheick Kongo Booked to Fight Mark Godbeer in Bellator Debut

Bellator announced during it’s latest event last night in Uncasville that UFC vet Cheick Kongo will make his promotional debut versus Mark Godbeer on September 27th, The bout is expected to be part of Bellator’s Ninth Season heavyweight tournament. Bellator 101 will take place at the Rose Garden Arena in Portland, Oregon.

Kongo (18-8-2) hasn’t fought since UFC 159 in April when he was stopped by Roy Nelson in the first round. Prior to the loss, the French fighter worked his way to a unanimous decision win over Shawn Jordan at UFC 149 last July.

Godbeer (8-1), who will also be making his Bellator debut, hasn’t fought since he stopped Catalin Zmarandescu at BAMMA 9 in March, 2012. The British heavyweight is 4-1 in his last five fights.

Bellator 101 will also feature the opening round of the promotion’s next lightweight tourney which will include Rich Clementi vs. Rob Sinclair, Saad Awad vs. Martin Stapleton, John Alessio vs. Will Brooks and Marcus Davis vs. Alexander Sarnavskiy.

The event will be broadcast on SPIKE.
