Since there’s been indications recently that professional MMA could finally be legalized in New York sooner than later, Chris Weidman is already campaigning for some historic fights in his home state.

The UFC Middleweight Champion recently spoke to AXS TV about his dream to fight at the iconic Madison Square Garden, but during the segment he also relayed he wants to fight light-heavyweight champ Jon Jones in their native New York.

“I wanted to clear out my division more, before I finally got a fight, I wanted that super fight with Jon Jones, and that fight’s going to happen at some point. I’ve talked to him about it, face-to-face, and he’s excited about it too.”

“Who’s the true king of New York? You’ve got two guys from New York. He’s the champ at 205 and I’m the champ at 185. He’s undefeated. I’m undefeated.”

Before a super fight can materialize, however, Weidman will have to get past Vitor Belfort, who he’ll fight on May 23rd at UFC 187. The accomplished wrestler also has contenders like “Jacare” Souza, Yoel Romero and Luke Rockhold waiting in the wings.

Jones, on the other hand, is much closer to ‘cleaning out’ his division, as the only top contender he hasn’t defeated is Anthony Johnson. Those two will also fight at UFC 187.
