Cody Gibson and Ulysses Gomez to Battle for TPF Bantamweight Title

Tachi Palace Fights has announced that Ulysses Gomez and Cody Gibson will battle for the promotion’s vacant bantamweight championship, December 2nd in Leemore, California.

Gibson (5-1) entrenched a title shot by stopping Walel Watson in the second round at TPF 9 in May. The bantamweight was expected to face Farkhad Sharipov for the title, however, Sharipov went on to sign with Bellator after defeating Tommy Vargas.

“It feels good to be fighting for that title. Look at where the two guys that held that belt before are at now. They’ve both moved on to bigger things,” Gibson was quoted saying in a press release from the promotion. “I’m really excited to be fighting for that title.”

“Ulysses is great on the ground. I know he is a brown belt at Cobra Kai. I’ve seen all of his fights,” Gibson noted about his next opponent. “I know what he is going to bring to the table. He isn’t bad on his feet… I mean he is no Jose Aldo, but he isn’t a fish out of water either.”

Gomez (8-2) was reportedly planning on returning to flyweight, following a submission win over bantamweight Drew Bittner at TPF 10 in August, but the veteran reconsidered after being offered a title shot.

“It’s a big honor that Tachi thinks enough about me to give me an opportunity to fight for the 135-pounhd title,” Gomez said. “I’m looking to make the most out of the opportunities that are given to me.”

“Cody is a really good wrestler and a game fighter. You can’t sleep on him,” Gomez added. “I think this should be an exciting fight.”

As always, the upcoming TPF 11 card will be hosted by the Tachi Palace Hotel and Casino. The card will feature a flyweight bout between champion Ian McCall and Josh Rave in the main event.
